Bille August’s inspirational docudrama Goodbye Bafana begins in 1968, with South Africa buried neck-deep in the horrors of apartheid and Nelson Mandela (Dennis Haysbert) — then an underground leader of the African National Congress — imprisoned on Robben Island for sedition. As the story opens, the native African population of the country — 25,000,000 in number — buckles beneath the crippling weight of the racist white minority, who control the Nationalist Party Government. The film follows the spiritual and psychological journey of James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes), a Caucasian Afrikaner who came of age on a farm in the Transkei and initially views all blacks as subhuman. Gregory also speaks Mandela’s native language of Xhosa with perfect fluency, which makes him an ideal candidate to serve as warden of the Robben Island Prison and eavesdrop on Mandela and his inmates. What he fails to anticipate is the most unlikely and special of friendships (one of history’s greatest) that burgeons between himself and Mandela — and helps him evolve from a narrow-minded bigot with limited self-awareness to a sensitive, humane critic of social injustice with a heightened awareness of mankind’s ill treatment of one another and a genuine level of love for his fellow man. As the friendship between Gregory and Mandela grows and matures, it symbolizes Africa’s transition from the oppressiveness of Apartheid to the freedom of multi-racial democracy.

At first I thought this is a boring WWII movie (I bought this DVD a few months ago, watched 20 minutes of it) but then I gave it a second chance as I have nothing to do now. Sitting at home recuperating. Well, a very different aspect of warfare you’d see here. I was wrong at first.
Its about a group of North African/African men fighting the Krauts under the French Tricolore, their colonial master and they were discriminated and treated in double standards. Promotion of ranks were given to French, fresh tomatoes ration were only given to French, front line job were given to them but the other French units take credit of their sacrifices, no education for them… many more.

You must watch this. Go get it at your nearest pirated DVD peddler.

At last… at last I found this DVD at a shop in Aman Suria, PJ. I’ve been looking for this show since it was released a few years ago. Der Untergang. World War II buff should really really see this although it is not that historically accurate (some crucial info were omitted for unknown reason). You must read this review at The Guardian for an indepth review.

After stumbling upon this blog, Best of World War II… I went to the pirated CD shop with my Szer to buy some DVDs for the weekend. Things are all organised in alphabetical order and a look at the D section, I was surprised to see the face of Bruno Ganz @ Hitler. I was mesmerised. The rest is history.

After watching it, Szer also said it is something refreshing and different as we see the war on a different perspective. Like what we watched in Sophie Scholl. And they are all connected. Szer said I’m a war freak. Maybe. I highly recommend this movie, Downfall.

Now, I have another war movie waiting to be watched. Tigerland… Colin Farrell. Vietnam war. Wonder if it is good.

After doing some viewing at the official Transformers movie website, I come to know that the yankee’s General Motors secured the advertising deal and the Bumblebee we all know was a cute yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Man, how the fuck can they change the it to another car altogether. I prefer it to be changed to the current version of Beetle (yeah, the new one) rather than a chevy camaro OR at least name the character Goldbug . Its totally different car in size and design. Bumblebee is etched into our brain as the Volkswagen Beetle.

Anyway, I’m not the director and who the hell am I to say things. By the way, I read somewhere the reason why they opted for camaro is because Volkswagen don’t wanna license it. They said there’s too much violence in transformers and they don’t want Beetle to be portrayed as a war machine.Hmmm… oh fuck, even Megatron don’t look like a gun anymore. They might as well put in Galvatron. Arrgghh.

Here’s the list of characters I would’ve casted in the movie if I’m be the director:

Arcee, that pinky lady Autobot

Blaster, the autobot radio

As for the Decepticon camp, I wanted to see Astrotrain, the decepticon triple-changer (a train and a space shuttle.)

Here you can listen to the Generation 1 outro theme song.

But the, the silver screen will always come out with their own variation of things. Just hope it’ll be good although I still can’t accept Megatron’s complete makeover. Where can I get this toy for future Baby G?? I know Kok Ming@Sean used to have this.

Afterall, Transformers are modified in every generations. This latest one should be a good movie.

The true story of Germany’s most famous anti-Nazi heroine is brought to thrilling life in the multi-award winning drama SOPHIE SCHOLL-THE FINAL DAYS. Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film of 2005, SOPHIE SCHOLL stars Julia Jentsch in a luminous performance as the young coed-turned-fearless activist. Armed with long-buried historical records of her incarceration, director Marc Rothemund expertly re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl’s life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence.

In 1943, as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. One of its few female members, Sophie Scholl is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

I’m gonna watch this tonite!

This film is remarkable in how it manages to be very accurately detailed and also very expressive and poignant. The historical detail never bogs down the narrative. This is due to the character of Sophie (who is magnificently played by Julie Jentsch). Scholl was driven by her Christian faith and love of mankind. Her courage and defiance spouts from her faith. She never shows weakness to her persecutors, often infuriating and frustrating them.

This film stands from other films about the Third Reich due to it’s optimistic nature derived from Sophie’s faith. God is omnipresent in this film. There is almost constant sunshine in the film (a rarity for a WWII movie). The defiance, confidence and hopefulness of Hans and Sophie, even as they walk to their deaths, emphasizes the fallible, temporary nature of the Earthly world and the permanence and perfect love of God.

***

SOPHIE SCHOLL-THE FINAL DAYS received three Lolas (German Oscars) including the Audience Award and Best Actress Award to Jentsch for her brilliant characterization of the title role. The film also won two Silver Bears for Best Director and Best Actress at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival.
