Law of large numbers

October 10th, 2011 No comments

This evening I was stuck in the traffic jam and it took me 2 hours to reach home. One hour was spent on Jalan Sultan Ismail where my office is situated. The distance from my office building to Wisma Sime Darby is less than 2 km.

I wonder how much production can I and all the motorists who, like me, are stuck in the jam, can generate to the economy had we stayed back in the office to do some work. How much fuel we could have saved? How much carbon dioxide we all collectively released during that jam?

Hmm, worth pondering.

Associateship

October 9th, 2011 No comments

Finally, the certificate was collected and submitted to HR. Now let’s wait for month end for the payslip. Hopefully this mid month, the pecuniary motivation which the company promised will be in hand.

This timely upward pecuniary adjustment is much welcomed as Bubu G is about to arrive and I hope to provide the best of everything I could to him.

Dear Lord, thank you for everything especially a blessed junior and all the bread that you provided for me and my wife.

The Apple inside Steve

October 6th, 2011 2 comments

The first Apple experience I had was at primary school. That time I was maybe about 8-9 years old. The computer class started with a few Apple II and Macintosh computers. We learned BASIC programming then. Then when the invasion began, Intel-MS Dos PC invasion that is, everyone were so excited. The game Karateka that was available on PC was a treat for us if we finish our work. Everyone just loved Karateka.

From there, many of us defected to the other camp, the Intel-M$ cartel.

Back then, only the priviledged few could afford Apple computers. There onwards, Apple computers were just another expensive boxy beige personal computer….until the iMac came around 1997/98. That was the start of Apple coming back to our lives.

Everyone were so crazy about Apple and I always wanted to own one since the iMac… although I have been saving to buy one till now. Gosh. The first Apple product I owned was the iPod Nano. It really revolutionised the way we listen to music. Walkman? Discman? So dinosaur….

Fast forward to early this year, I bought the iPhone 4 after seeing the success of iPhone 3 and 3S. My colleague JK and BIL Alvyn were somewhat the culprit, infecting me with the Apple virus. When bonus was announced, I signed-up DiGi plan rightaway just for the iPhone. Did I regret? Yes and no. DiGi line sucks but for the phone, no choice lah. Stuck with the carrier for 2 years.

Just when you almost got enough of iPhone, the iPad came along. Not long after that, the iPad 2 I bought online for my wife arrived from Shenzen.

And here today, the architect, visionary, designer and innovator of all these gadgets that changed our life for the better has passed on. Many of us may not know him personally but to me the iPhone that he brought to us is something so useful and handy in all kinds of situation. Of course thirdparty software developers also played a major role, the Appstore idea that is the brainchild of Mr. Jobs has made it so revolutionary and changed the landscape of software as well as music business.

The BSD-based iOS that runs the iPhone and iPad is considered robust as compared to other mobile OS. The decision to derived their OS from BSD-based Darwin kernel had always been a wise decision.

So, RIP to Steve Jobs the legend. May his soul rest in peace. Let’s hope his successor Tim Cook would do some magic and churn out better innovative products.

Classical music

October 2nd, 2011 No comments

Treble clef.. Semi-colon- semi brief, tanga brief,mini-brief… Those are some music jargons which I never liked.

Went to Petronas Philharmonic Orchestra Centre at KLCC this afternoon. It’s my first classical music concerto. I never liked classical music before but recently I found joy listening them… thanks to YouTube that made all this possible. Watching Wladek Spilzman play in the movie The Pianist also boosted the interest.

I’ve never thought being in the auditorium and getting the live music into your eardrums is very very enjoying. The three of us – Szer, Bubu and myself. I wanna expose Bubu to classical music so that in future he might become a musical instrument maestro. Maybe Bubu will play violin or perhaps the piano like Szer.

You guys should go too I’d guess. Ticket is cheap – RM 30, RM 60, RM 90 and RM 120. Depending on what piece they are playing… Some complicated pieces with renowned semiconductor conductor may be more pricey. The show runs for about 2 hours. Great weekend outing for a change.

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)… yeah!! Go check out their website.

For those of you who are going there for the first time, bring your own water and food and hide it in your oversized bag. You can bring your own coffee in Thermos flask. Why am I telling you this? The very same bottle of mineral water (small bottle) you get in Kedai Mesra at every Petronas station nationwide for RM 1.50 (is this the correct price?) is sold for RM6.00 thereat Dewan Philharmonik Petronas, KLCC. Let’s not talk about the Nescafe 3 in 1 coffee sachet they are selling.

How are we going to encourage the average Malaysian to go and catch a show there?

Lamborghini Gallardo SE : Burnt case

September 27th, 2011 No comments

The burnt Lamborghini Gallardo SE that we saw in newspapers recently…. is now in a workshop somewhere in Subang Jaya. I was talking with Mun Choon about it this afternoon over lunch, wondering who is the insurer and if our company will be assigned to assess the loss.

I tell you man… how I wished striking 4D or lottery could be that easy. Soon after we returned to office after lunch, one of our managers received the assignment to survey that very green Lamborghini Gallardo and so much coincidence, from the very insurer which I’m assisting him to coordinate.

Hence the case is assigned to me. Hopefully there won’t be too much work like the two Porsches – 997T and Cayman that I’ve surveyed which were assigned by the same insurer. The sad fact is that we cannot bill them that much for the scope of work we are going to carry out.

So, for the mean time, go read the news here:-

Money-CAN-buy relationship

September 25th, 2011 No comments

Can’t buy me love, love..can’t buy me love……. ok…that famous Beatles’ song is so dated and wrong in today’s society and landscape. I love the Beatles but I just have to say this..today.

Mr. One Point 5ive’s (1.5) wedding is a grand event in the company where even the HRs, PAs and the rest of the workers have to chip in some labour to run the preparation affairs. The saddest fact is that even I was not spared. My peers, the salarymen like me gotta act as messenger to send invitation cards to the who’s who of the industries – both insurance and automotive. HRs are planning the invites, the boss himself is orchestrating the showdown, the directors are roped in to run the PR things with the industry guests.

Having wedded myself, of course I don’t want my wedding to be marred by the attendance of superficial guests whom I don’t even know, but sometime this is somehow inevitable. They could be my parents’ friends. Alright, maybe 20% of the guests unknown to me is still tolerable….but to have my wedding dinner to be like an industry convention or my parents grand showoff is a NO-NO. Even if they are paying for the whole wedding costs. It is my wedding and I want people to remember me, the groom and NOT my dad, the company and or the investors. I want my closest friends to attend it for they are the guest of honour…. not some Datuk or Tan Sri or someone whom I’ve never met even though that fella is of use and who is giving some business to my company. Gosh… I can’t believe I’m so un-entrepreneur.

To even ask the managers…office staff to be the groom’s “heng tai” is even more epic. He doesn’t have any friends and was too desperate you ask your subordinates to be the heng tai. Man, can’t believe there’s such a loser. And these subordinates have got no choice as they are working for the father and or the groom. The managers’ balls are being squeezed to the last drop of juice.

I had some acquaintances who asked me to be their heng tai on their wedding day. Hey come on lah… we’re not even that close how can you ask me to be ridiculed by the jimuis. Its just so wrong. Worse, to be at your bachelor’s nite… entertaining your relatives who I lagi don’t give a fuck.

Niamah (to borrow the word from Patrick Teoh), what is wrong with the world? I guess…. money really can buy love. I WILL NEVER DO THIS TO MY SON/DAUGHTER.

Undies

September 24th, 2011 No comments

How many of you buy undies as frequent as like buying shirts or pants? The reason is that buying undies require art. The art of imagining you are wearing it…how comfortable it would be and will it be too tight, will it be too loose etc.

This post seems rather dull and uninteresting but the topic is too important to be not discussed. As we can see, different manufacturer uses different scale or measurement for their products. Size L for Brand A may not be the same as Brand B of the same size and the fact that we are not allowed to try on the undies we are buying adds to the frustration when making a purchase. Hygiene is the  main concern but health is another concern later on when the undies is found to be too tight after purchase and you could not return the “opened” undies to the shop for exchange to bigger size. You are then stuck with the tight undies and you force yourself wearing it hence hurting your balls in the long run.

These days, price of undies are not cheap either. How good if we could try on undies before buying it rather than guessing if the size is suitable for us. Also, some undies have their label stitched on the waist band and some of these can be rather uncomfortable when the seams are rough.

Gosh. there’s just so much to look into when buying undies. Now, that’s why we often use the same undies until it is really worn off. No one bothers about the hole as long as it is still wearable.
